Sasaki Ganryu Rematch Guide — Counter Stances and the Back-Head Trap

How to beat Sasaki Ganryu's rematches: break the glowing counter stance with Arm Awakening, dodge the back-head grab, and handle the spin-slash double attack.

You'll duel Sasaki Ganryu more than anyone else in the game, and each rematch layers on something new. The second fight introduces his signature toys; the third is a pure exam of everything you've learned.
Rematch: New Mechanics
The counter stance (new system). From this fight on, enemies can plant a counter stance — weapon glowing, body locked still. Swing into it and you eat a forced counterattack. The answer: break the stance directly with the Arm Awakening (Crush). This interaction defines the whole fight.
The back-head grab. His grab attack now comes from the head growing on his back, used frequently but woven inside combos rather than standalone. Dodge when the mouth gapes at its widest.
The leaping overhead chop. Most of his openers and long-range charges resolve into a slow jump-slam. Slow enough to be your best Issen target in the fight.
Spin-slash, then the head chop. When he spins his blade in hand, a sequence is coming: one slash from the sword, then a second from the back-head. The second hit ambushes almost everyone — see the spin, expect two hits, not one.
Rear-limb sweeps. He swings with the limbs growing from his back; the wind-up is a slight body lean. A clean block freezes the limb briefly — sever it to chunk his posture. Striking his back breaks the limbs outright and disables those moves, though they regrow over time.
Raised hand, head slam. Hand raised high means the brain is about to hammer down. Pure reaction check — dodge on sight.
Third Duel: The Fundamentals Exam
The Arashiyama rematch adds no tricks — the moveset matches Yasaka Tower exactly. His second health bar ignites the Flame state, boosting speed and damage without adding a single new move. Fight it on muscle memory and bank your Awakening windows.
