Defense System Explained — Deflect, Parry, Read-Dodge, Issen and Blade Clashes

Every defensive tool in Onimusha: Way of the Sword with its exact input and payoff: deflect, parry, read-dodge, the Issen counter, and the blade-clash mini-game.

Way of the Sword is an eye-for-an-eye action game: nearly everything an enemy throws at you has a defensive answer, and each answer uses a different tool. Here's the full toolkit.
Deflect
Press guard at the instant an enemy attack lands. A successful deflect neutralizes the hit and chips the enemy's posture bar. If you've bought the Flame skill from the skill tree, deflects also build your Flame gauge — the resource that supercharges everything else.
Parry
Same timing as the deflect, but you press guard + interact together. The payoff for the extra finger: a successful parry guts a huge chunk of posture. When you need an execution window fast, this is the button.
Read-Dodge
The answer to grappling/body attacks — the moves guard can't handle. Dodge at the instant of impact to take zero damage, leaving a brief afterimage. With the chain-slash skill learned, successful reads fill a dedicated gauge; a full gauge lets you unleash the chain-slash burst.
The Issen
The series signature and the strictest check in the game: press light or heavy attack within a few frames of an enemy hit connecting. On regular enemies it's an instant kill; on bosses it deals heavy damage plus a stagger. Frame-tight, practice-intensive, spectacular every time.
Blade Clashes
When your single-hand or two-hand attack collides with an enemy's weapon, a light flashes — a blade clash. The answer is to play rock-paper-scissors:
- One-hand attack clash → respond with a two-hand attack.
- Two-hand attack clash → respond with a one-hand attack.
The flash itself tells you which: a horizontal streak means their one-hand triggered it, a vertical streak means two-hand. Read the line, press the opposite.
Putting It Together
Deflects for steady pressure and gauge-building, parries when you want posture gone, read-dodges for grapples, Issens for executions, and clashes for style. Every boss guide on this site assumes this toolkit — start with the defense-heavy fights to drill it.
