Chain Issen Not Triggering? The Fix, Frame by Frame

Why your chain Issen whiffs: the three preconditions, the two correct timings (visual cue vs motion tracking), and the PC frame-rate settings that restore the window.

The chain Issen is the flashiest tool in the kit and the most commonly mistimed. If it never triggers for you, the cause is almost always one of three preconditions — or the single most common timing mistake below.
First, the Preconditions
- The skill must be unlocked. No chain-Issen talent on the skill tree, no chain Issen — ever. Check this first.
- Two enemies minimum. The chain needs a second target in range; it cannot trigger in a duel.
- Only a normal Issen chains. Deflect-executions and Crushing Issens belong to a different combo family — you can't chain off them.
The Timing Everyone Gets Wrong
The failing pattern: mashing attack the instant the Issen starts, or waiting for the white flash (by then it's too late).
Method one — hit-confirm timing (recommended). The chain window opens when your Issen lands, not when it begins: the instant your blade bites and the enemy flashes white, press attack again. The game auto-lock-teleports you to the next enemy. Repeat that rhythm for every link. Say it as a mantra: when the Issen cuts flesh, press — not when the Issen starts.
Method two — motion tracking (easier for beginners). Ignore the flash effects entirely. Watch Musashi's swing and press attack as the blade comes down. Rhythm-based, more forgiving of visual noise.
One iron rule either way: single clean taps only. Long-presses and button-mash both sail straight past the window.
The PC Trap: Frame Rate
The Issen window is frame-counted, so high frame rates shrink it (the full math in the frame-rate guide):
- 30fps: the longest window — practice here.
- 60fps: moderate.
- 120/144fps+: brutally tight; expect whiffs.
Recommended PC setup while learning: cap the game at 60fps (30 if you're struggling), disable VRR and frame generation (DLSS frame gen interferes with Issen timing), then raise the cap once your hands know the rhythm.
Training Aids
- Enable the action-hint setting — enemies telegraph attacks with red dots, which steadies your first Issen.
- Use the Training Grounds bell for the chain-Issen drill: infinite practice, no running around.
A Sensible Practice Ladder
- In the Training Grounds, drill the normal Issen until 6 of 10 attempts land.
- Chase two-link chains only at first. Add a third link only after the second is reliable.
- When a chain drops, don't panic-swing — reset, wait for the next attack, start over.
- In the field, hunt clusters of regular mobs — elites and bosses can't be chain-Issened at all.
