Save File Location, Save Mirrors and the Demo Bonus Rule

Where Onimusha: Way of the Sword stores saves on Steam and Epic, how save mirrors and auto-saves work, and why demo progress doesn't carry over.

Backups, mirrors and one rule about the demo everyone should know.

Whether you're backing up a run, swapping in a completion save, or just wondering how forgiving the checkpointing is, here's how Way of the Sword handles saving — on disk and in-game.

PC Save File Locations

For backup, replacement or editing, dig here:

  • Steam: inside your Steam install under userdata — the pattern is Steam\userdata\[your Steam ID]\[game AppID]\remote. The store page's AppID is 2638890, which is the folder name to look for.
  • Epic: C:\Users\[your username]\AppData\Local\[game name]\Saved\SaveGames.

Since PC players discovered these paths around launch, Capcom may still shuffle folder naming in patches — if a path looks stale after a big update, check the newest folder under the same root first.

In-Game: Mirrors and Auto-Saves

The game pairs frequent auto-saving with a classic checkpoint item:

  • Save mirrors are the campaign's anchor points. Beyond manual saves, each one is a fast-travel node, an equipment and upgrade bench, a storage manager — and the place where DLC and bonus content gets redeemed.
  • Auto-save fires as you advance main objectives, enter new zones, or trigger key side quests, so exploration progress survives even a sudden exit.

Between the two, death costs minutes, not hours. If a boss is whaling on you, the honest fix is walking back to the mirror, upgrading, and eating before the rematch.

Demo Saves: What Carries Over

The demo asked a question worth answering precisely:

  • Progress does not transfer. Demo playthroughs and saves don't import into the retail game — everyone starts the full 20-hour campaign fresh.
  • The bonus does. Players who finished the specified demo section and kept the save received the exclusive First Lantern omamori automatically on launch day. Full claim steps in the First Lantern guide — worth doing, since the charm boosts red soul gains for the whole campaign.

So if you still have an old demo file sitting on disk, don't delete it expecting progress — keep it for the charm's sake and start clean otherwise.
