Benkei Boss Guide — Armor Stripping and the Pink-Glow Rule

Benkei's armored fight decoded: posture-only openings, five execution-stripped plates, every swing direction mapped, and how to stop his advancing spin.

Benkei opens the fight fully armored: nothing you swing at him connects for damage. The entire first act is a posture battle — deflect and parry to drain him, then execute to strip each plate. Learn his weapon swings by heart, because on higher difficulties a single hit he lands sends him straight into his buffed Flame state.
The Core Mechanic
- Opening armor: no direct damage possible.
- Your tools: deflects and parries drain posture; executions break the plates one by one — five body parts in sequence.
- The rhythm: it's a memorization fight. Every swing has a direction and an answer.
The notes below assume Flame-state timings — the hardest version of each attack.
Attack Map
Blade rested left. Normally two slashes from that side, with the second a pink-glow undodgeable. In Flame state it becomes a three-hit chain ending in an overhead drop.
Overhead double chop. Two hits; the second is a pink-glow attack — deflect or parry, dodging is not an option.
Right-side slashes. The friendly one: standard single hits or two-hit strings with no special properties.
Spear-grip thrust. The nasty string: thrust → left slash (undodgeable) → overhead slam (undodgeable). All three require deflects or parries — no dodging out.
The advancing spin. When Benkei whirls his weapon and walks forward, a single well-timed block on any one hit forces the whole advance to a stop.
After the Last Plate
With all five plates stripped via executions, your normal attacks finally land. From there it's a standard posture-and-punish fight — nothing new, just a big man with no armor and a grudge.
His rematch in the finale adds new mechanics — see the Oni Castle walkthrough for that version.
