Capcom's Oni Notes profile of Sasaki Kojiro (Ganryu) in Onimusha: Way of the Sword: lazy drifting footwork, taunting feints, and why your first duel with him is brutal.

Capcom's official character notes pulled back the curtain on the game's signature rival: Sasaki Ganryu — the Sasaki Kojiro of legend, and the swordsman destined to cross blades with Musashi again and again.
Personality as Moveset
Director Ken Nihei's framing: the character's defining trait is that his personality lives entirely inside his combat animation. Where conventional duelists move with crisp menace, Ganryu saunters — lazy, drifting footwork that never telegraphs a commit, broken up by taunting feints thrown mid-approach. The effect in play is disorientation: his range is unusual, his rhythm is wrong on purpose, and first-time duelers keep getting caught pressing on his beat instead of their own.
The first encounter is tuned as a wall, and the rematch is one of the game's hardest fights.
The Official Counter-Strategy
The notes include the intended answer, and it is not aggression. Early in the duel, defuse rather than deal: guard, deflect, observe. Learn his cadence and his tells; let him show you the feint. Once the rhythm is mapped, the windows appear — and then you punish in long, committed strings.
Beyond the fight, Capcom points at the man himself: his turbulent life story and his peculiar code are woven into the campaign, and they are worth the read. Our character codex collects what the game reveals.
