Semi-Open Kyoto: How Onimusha's Side Quests and District Exploration Work

PC Gamer's preview of Onimusha: Way of the Sword's semi-open chapters: free-roam Edo Kyoto districts, side quests, hidden bosses, an ink-wash map and save-mirror fast travel.

Onimusha: Way of the Sword keeps a linear chapter spine, but Capcom's preview material — led by PC Gamer's hands-on — confirms several chapters open into semi-open districts of Edo-era Kyoto that you can roam freely.
What Open Districts Contain
Inside an unlocked district you can go off-script: talk to residents, take Kyoto Tales side quests, hunt hidden mini-bosses, and soak in the city's history. The preview chapter was built around a real temple, Rokudo Chinno-ji — home to the well said in legend to reach the underworld — and the developers noted the game lets you enter parts of Kyoto's real landmarks that actual visitors never get to see.
Reading the Map
The map is rendered in ink-wash style, and its color language is functional: districts veiled in red miasma are locked until the story opens them, while active areas pin side quests and interaction points. Scattered across the city are the save mirrors — the series' shrines-to-go, where you fast travel, swap equipment, reinforce weapons and armor, and save. Our chapter hub walks each district in story order.
One more preview-era note, since shipped: difficulty options were added after demo feedback, and the structure means optional content matters for the platinum — sweep districts before the Rendaino point of no return.
