Onimusha: Way of the Sword Is a Standalone Story — With Deliberate Homages

Director Ken Nihei confirms Way of the Sword shares no continuity with earlier Onimusha games — but classic enemies return rebuilt, redesigned for new players and veterans alike.

The question every returning fan asked got a direct answer in Game Informer's Capcom Osaka interview: Onimusha: Way of the Sword shares no direct story connection with the previous games. No continuing plotlines, no required homework — the 20-year gap will not cost newcomers a thing.
Rebuilt, Not Recycled
The homage layer is real, though, and the director was specific about how it works. Certain enemies are reconstructions of designs from the classic games — familiar silhouettes reintroduced for longtime players to catch. But none of them are ports: every Genma in the game is, in essence, a new creation, with old ideas pulled apart and recombined into this game's own bestiary rather than copied forward.
The approach reads as a deliberate two-audience strategy: a clean entry point for the players who never touched the PS2 originals, and a layer of recognition for the ones who did — the same balance the Mifune-inspired presentation strikes elsewhere.
So: new story, new Musashi, new Kyoto. The full walkthrough assumes zero prior knowledge, and the enemy roster shows how far the redesigns go.
