Capcom pulled Onimusha: Way of the Sword's launch forward from September 25 to September 4, 2026 — producer Akihito Kadowaki on facing a crowded month with confidence.

September 4 — twenty days early and smiling about it.

Capcom moved Onimusha: Way of the Sword's launch up from September 25 to September 4, 2026 — a rare step in an industry that mostly moves the other way, and a confident one given what else September had on the calendar.

Why Move Into a Crowded Month?

Producer Akihito Kadowaki admitted the density of the season surprised him, but framed the date as belief rather than bravado. His case had two pillars: Musashi himself — a name that needs no introduction to anyone who owns a console — and the combat system, whose pursuit of pure swordfighting satisfaction is, in his words, the franchise's irreplaceable core. In a market stuffed with big releases, the bet was that a genuinely distinct action game does not need to hide from competition.

The game's credentials as a return rather than a revival project: the series' signature Issen counter intact at the center of combat, new rendering tech underneath, and a demon-slaying Edo-Kyoto setting — the launch plan covered PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, later joined by Switch 2.

History's verdict is already in: the early date did not hurt — the game shipped one million on day one and topped Japan's charts in its first week.
